Distributed Systems Engineer | Cloud Platform | Go / Rust | Kubernetes
Location: Remote (US & Canada) with optional office access in San Francisco
We're partnering with a well-funded, venture-backed infrastructure startup that's building a next-generation cloud database platform. The company is developing a Postgres-native technology that enables organizations to unify transactional databases, full-text search, vector search, and analytics into a single platform—eliminating the complexity of managing multiple systems.
Already trusted by a growing number of enterprise customers, the business is entering an exciting growth phase and is looking for an experienced Distributed Systems Engineer to help build its managed cloud platform from the ground up.
The Opportunity
You'll join a small, high-calibre engineering team working on the company's cloud control plane, building the infrastructure that provisions, operates, and scales customer database clusters in production.
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on distributed systems, Kubernetes, automation, and cloud-native infrastructure. You'll have significant ownership over technical decisions and the opportunity to influence both product direction and architecture from an early stage.
What You'll Be Working On
-
Designing and building a cloud-native control plane for a managed database platform
-
Developing Kubernetes Operators and Controllers to provision, upgrade, scale, and maintain customer clusters
-
Building automation around backups, replication, failover, monitoring, and lifecycle management
-
Designing APIs and orchestration systems that manage stateful infrastructure
-
Working closely with cloud-native database technologies and the wider Postgres ecosystem
-
Improving deployment, testing, monitoring, and operational tooling
-
Collaborating directly with customers to solve complex infrastructure challenges
-
Helping shape product strategy, technical architecture, and engineering best practices
What We're Looking For
You'll likely have experience in several of the following:
-
Building distributed systems or cloud infrastructure platforms
-
Developing Kubernetes Operators, Controllers, CRDs, or other Kubernetes-native software
-
Designing APIs, control planes, orchestration platforms, or infrastructure automation
-
Production development experience in Go or Rust
-
Operating reliable production workloads on Kubernetes
-
Experience with infrastructure tooling such as Terraform, Helm, Bash, or Python
Nice-to-have experience includes:
-
Database operators or Database-as-a-Service platforms
-
Cloud-native Postgres technologies
-
Search platforms, analytical databases, or high-performance data systems
-
Open-source contributions
-
Experience working in early-stage or high-growth startups
What Makes This Role Interesting
-
Build a cloud platform from the ground up rather than maintaining legacy infrastructure
-
Work on technically challenging distributed systems and Kubernetes internals
-
Join a highly technical engineering team with significant autonomy
-
Influence architecture and product direction from day one
-
Work directly with customers solving real infrastructure problems
-
Opportunity to contribute to open-source technologies
If you're passionate about distributed systems, Kubernetes, databases, and building developer infrastructure at scale, I'd be happy to tell you more about the company and the opportunity.

Forward Deployed Engineer
Location: Los Angeles (Preferred), New York, Seattle, Austin
Compensation: Up to $225,000 Base + Equity + Comprehensive Benefits
We're working with one of the most exciting engineering startups in the US as they continue to build out their Forward Deployed Engineering team.
This isn't a traditional software engineering role.
It's designed for engineers who enjoy solving complex technical problems alongside customers, influencing product direction, and shipping production code that has an immediate impact.
If you're looking for ownership, variety and the opportunity to bridge engineering, product and customer success, this is one of the strongest opportunities currently available.
The Role
As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you'll own customer outcomes from initial deployment through long-term success.
You'll spend time working directly with engineering teams, understanding their technical challenges, identifying opportunities, and building production-ready solutions that solve real problems.
Many of the solutions you build will evolve into core product functionality used across the entire customer base.
You'll operate at the intersection of software engineering, product management and customer engagement, giving you significantly more ownership than a traditional engineering role.
Travel is an important part of the position, typically around 25 to 30% of your time, with occasional periods closer to 50%. Most travel consists of short customer visits lasting a few days.
What You'll Be Working With
The team hires exceptional engineers first and is largely language agnostic.
Their technology stack includes modern backend and frontend technologies, with opportunities to work across the full stack depending on customer requirements.
Engineers who enjoy working across multiple parts of a system tend to thrive in this environment.
What They're Looking For
You'll likely have:
-
A few years of professional software engineering experience
-
Experience shipping and owning production software
-
Strong coding fundamentals
-
Experience building products in fast-moving environments
-
Confidence working directly with customers and cross-functional teams
-
A passion for solving ambiguous engineering problems
-
A desire to influence both product and technical direction
The strongest candidates are able to clearly explain:
-
What they personally built
-
Why they built it
-
The impact it delivered
-
The technical decisions they made
-
How user or customer feedback influenced their work
What Makes This Different?
Most software engineering roles ask you to build features.
This role asks you to solve customer problems.
You'll work directly with users, influence the product roadmap, and own projects from the first customer conversation through to production deployment.
It's an opportunity to combine software engineering, product thinking and customer interaction without moving away from hands-on engineering.
Interview Process
The process consists of:
-
Recruiter conversation
-
Technical coding interview
-
Half-day onsite including:
-
Product demonstration
-
Coding interview
-
System design interview
-
Debugging and pair programming session
-
Behavioural and customer-focused interview
-
Hiring Manager discussion
-
-
Final Founder conversation
Compensation & Benefits
-
Up to $225,000 base salary
-
Equity
-
Comprehensive benefits package
-
Sign-on bonus available where appropriate
If you're an engineer who enjoys building production software, working directly with customers and wants to own problems from start to finish, I'd be happy to tell you more.
